Dancing With Myself: SEAN CHERCOVER interviews SEAN CHERCOVER

A little joy over at the wonderful DEATH BY KILLING where John Kenyon names his five favourite short stories of the year. Many thanks to you John; your picks put me in amazing company. It's worth tuning in there regulary as the recommendations are coming in thick and fast and every one of them has been fantastic to date.

And to today's interview.

Is it manners or music that maketh the man? Judge for yourself. Perhaps it's both.
Sean Chercover:

Q: Are you concerned about the voices in your head?

A: Not really. If I thought the voices were coming from a source other than myself, I’d be concerned. But I know you’re all just me, especially when one of you is interviewing me … and even when three or four of you are engaging in heated debate.

Q: But that’s a rare occurrence, isn’t it?

A: Dude, you’re in denial. You guys never shut the hell up. But it’s okay, I’m used to it by now. I really dig these lines by Walt Whitman: “Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes.”

Q: Oh God, Whitman’s a bore. And those lines sound like a bit of a cop-out, if you ask me.

A: Don’t start.

Q: Hey, this interview series is called Dancing With Myself – do you own a copy of the Gen X song?

A: I admit that I do, although I haven’t listened to in quite a while.

Q: What are the last five albums you listened to?

A: BACKATOWN, by Trombone Shorty. ONE DAY IT WILL PLEASE US TO REMEMBER EVEN THIS, by the New York Dolls. CUMBOLO, by Culture. TALK IS CHEAP, by Keith Richards & The X-Pensive Winos. GO FOR IT, by Stiff Little Fingers.

Q: Is that a fair representation of your taste in music?

A: It’s a fair representation of my taste in music over the last 24 hours. Don’t read more into it than that.

Q: It was an innocent question, man. Why so prickly?

A: Didn’t get enough sleep last night.

Q: Have you read Mark Billingham’s blog post “Thank You For Smoking” over at the Mulholland Books website? (http://www.mulhollandbooks.com/2010/09/14/thank-you-for-smoking/)

A: Yeah, it was very funny. And true. Lots of great posts over there.

Q: I guess I should ask a writing question. Where do you get your ideas?

A: I’m gonna slap you.

Q: I see we’re at Question #10—

A: No we’re not. #3 wasn’t a question.

Q: Back-off . Last question: What are you reading right now?

A: THE THOUSAND, by Kevin Guilfoile. Loving it.

Q: On behalf of Sean, I’d like to thank Nigel for hosting us at his blog…

A: I can speak for myself. Thanks to Nigel for hosting me at his blog.
